Indian telco giant Tata Communications Ltd has denied reports that it was on the receiving end of land perks associated with subsidiary Videsh Sanchar Nigam Ltd.
The group, which renamed state-run VSNL as Tata Communications after buying a controlling stake in it in 2002, was responding to a call for a probe into potential land deals by communications minister Kapil Sibal. Sibal reportedly believes that Tata may have postponed a demerger of 773 acres of land that had belonged to VSNL but had not been part of the sale.
Tata Communications was cited stating that it welcomes “any government process” able to speed up a land demerger.
The claims come against the backdrop of the country’s 2G scam, which appears to involve former telecoms minister A Raja and a host of executives. Incoming minister Sibal is working to break with sector sleaze and is close to announcing a new national telecoms law.
