Tashi InfoComm, a private Bhutanese mobile company, has received BTN 71.2m (US$1.5m) in funding from the government’s Universal Service Fund.
According to the Bhutan InfoComm and Media Authority (BICMA), which regulates ICT and media services in the country, the company will use the money to connect its network to about 200 villages in seven districts. According to a TeleGeography article, Tashi InfoComm will implement the second phase of the project, contributing BTN 30.47m (US$670,000), on top of the government funding.
For the first phase, Bhutan Telecom received some money to connect several other groups of villages. The project is expected to be completed by the end of 2010, according to TeleGeography.
