UK fixed-line and broadband group TalkTalk faces financial penalties if it continues to breach telecoms rules, UK regulator Ofcom has announced.
In a statement, the regulator said it had received more than 1,000 complaints this year about the group issuing bills to consumers for services they had not received.
Claudio Pollack, Ofcom’s director of consumer affairs, said the investigation had found the group had “billed customers for cancelled services: this is unacceptable, which is why we have ordered them to clean up their act or face the consequences”.
Ofcom has issued the group with a legally-binding notification to comply with consumer regulations, threatening a maximum penalty fine of 10% of relevant turnover.
The group has also been ordered to take necessary steps to resolve the errors, including refunds.
A spokesman for TalkTalk said the group had identified an issue with its cancellation process, which has now been resolved.
“TalkTalk Group has co-operated fully with Ofcom’s investigation and we apologise for the inconvenience caused to this limited group of former customers,” he said.
