The Ministry of Transportation and Communications (MOTC) announced on Monday that the country’s telecom companies would be able to join with Chinese companies to set up cables under the Taiwan Strait, according to local reports.
This move is expected to lower the cost and enhance the quality of communication between the two countries. But this does not allow the Chinese carriers to invest in or operate Taiwan’s fixed telcos, explained the reports.
Currently, telecommunications between Taiwan and China are often routed to third locations international via undersea cables or satellites, the MOTC was quoted as saying.
