Mobile operator T-Mobile USA is considering a potential sale of its towers for US$2bn, according to media reports.
Reuters reported last week that Rene Obermann, CEO of Deutsche Telekom, the parent company of T-Mobile USA, had said that the American company may sell 7,000 towers.
Deutsche Telekom released a statement on 20 January saying that it planned a cost-saving programme that would save US$1bn by 2013 as part of its growth strategy for T-Mobile USA.
A spokesman for Deutsche Telekom told TelecomFinance that the sale of towers was just one potential way to deliver these savings. Others may include partnerships or network sharing. He said that the main message was that T-Mobile USA should be a self-funding organisation.
Deutsche Telekom is aiming for a US$3bn increase in T-Mobile USA’s revenue by 2013.
The chief executive of T-Mobile USA, Philipp Humm, said: “We will offer our customers the best data plans, the best service, and the best 4G network.”
