The Syrian state is to kick off the financial auction for its third mobile licence on April 11, reports Zawya citing local newspaper al-Watan.
Prequalified bidders Saudi Telecom, France Telecom, Turkcell, Etisalat and QTel will be invited to bid by the end of March.
Consultancy Detecon is running the sale.
Cited in the report was Imad Sabouni, the Syrian communications and technology minister, who said that the country expects to set up its telecoms regulatory authority by the beginning of 2011.
Earlier this year, Syria passed a telecom law to ensure liberalisation and set up a partnership framework for state and private groups.
Representatives for the Syrian government were not able to comment by press time.
