Swiss incumbent Swisscom has announced SFr170m (E134m) plans with state-owned energy firm IWB to connect the city of Basel to fibre by the end of 2017.
The deal will see Swisscom assume 60%, or E80.4m, of the project’s total cost, with IWB paying the remainder.
By utilising IWB’s electricity and drinking water infrastructure, the companies plan to further the progress they have both made in fibre as negotiations were being carried out between them.
Since an initial agreement was signed eight months ago, Swisscom has already installed high-speed networks in large parts of the city, and IWB has begun a joint pilot project and carried out much of the preliminary work.
The cantonal council of Basel city is expected to make a decision on whether to allow the joint venture to go ahead by the beginning of 2011.
As previously reported by TelecomFinance, Swisscom is currently finalising similar fibre deployment partnerships in Zurich, Berne and Fribourg.
