Swiss incumbent Swisscom has announced a partnership with local utility EWB to connect the entire city of Berne to fibre by 2020 for SFr172m (E137m).
The deal closely follows a similar agreement with utilities firm IWB that will see Basel fully connected to fibre by the end of 2017, requiring a total investment of SFr170m (E136m).
Swisscom will bear 60% of the cost of both investments, and the respective utilities have committed to paying the remainder.
In October, the operator unveiled partnerships with utilities Geneva Industrial Services and St. Gallen Public Utilities for the construction of high-speed networks in Geneva and St. Gallen, respectively.
Further partnerships with utilities in the cities of Zurich and Fribourg are also being finalised.
