Swedish anti-corruption investigators have launched a probe into a deal made by the country’s incumbent telco TeliaSonera in Uzbekistan, where it faces allegations of bribery and money laundering.
TeliaSonera confirmed that Swedish police had collected information from the company regarding its Uzbek operations, but declined to disclose exactly what the investigation was looking into.
“The anti-corruption unit of the Swedish Prosecuting Authorities have now initiated an investigation, which we welcome,” stated the company.
The operator continues to strongly deny corruption allegations, which were made last week in a Swedish broadcast that looked into a 2007 deal it secured with Gibraltar-based Takilant for an Uzbek 3G licence.
TeliaSonera has launched its own external review into the matter, and CEO Lars Nyberg has said it could exit the country if it found wrongdoing.
The company operates in Uzbekistan under its Ucell brand, which has around nine million subscribers.
