The Swiss mobile operator Sunrise Communications has joined Telefonica’s “Partners Program”, which aims to allow selected operators to leverage on Telefonica’s scale and cooperate on certain business areas.
In a joint statement, the two companies said the partnership would allow both of them to capture additional efficiencies while improving their service offerings.
Sunrise and Telefonica will collaborate in several areas, including the procurement of network equipment, IT and devices.
Currently, Telefonica’s Partners Program includes two other companies, the French mobile operator Bouygues Telecom and the UAE-based telco Etisalat.
Te programme does not consider any equity alliance and limits itself to a commercial relationship, according to a Telefonica spokesman.
He said that the programme works by offering a catalogue of services to operators in exchange for an annual fee (which depends on the services finally chosen), as well as additional monetary compensations from usage.
“To Telefonica, this program represents an opportunity to generate additional revenues and to increase the scale of its global units,” he said.
Sunrise is owned by the London-based PE firm CVC Capital Partners.
