The Standing Rock Sioux tribe has announced the launch of Standing Rock Telecommunications, a mobile and broadband operator in the Great Plains of the US.
Following a US$11m investment, the Standing Rock Sioux erected 18 towers, two branch stores and a headquarters in an area that straddles the North Dakota and South Dakota border. SRT is the US’s first Native American telecommunications company and will serve an area that covers 18,000 people, bringing economic opportunities as well as reliable communications for the emergency services in a scattered community. Martin Three Stars, a local resident told local newspaper, the Sioux Falls Argus that the technology did not get to Standing Rock a moment too soon. “Things were getting real bad up here,” he said. “But this new company has shown that the tribe is investing in our lives. They are doing something to make all of our lives better.”
