US cellco Sprint is in talks with other companies about a buyout of Clearwire, Bloomberg reported referring to three people familiar with the discussions.
The plan is one of several alternative scenarios under discussion to provide loss making Clearwire with funding for its infrastructure projects.
Other companies taking part in the talks are Comcast, Time Warner Cable, and Bright House Networks according to the report. All companies are already shareholders in Clearwire. Cox Communications and Cablevisions Systems Corp have also been involved.
The talks are said to be at an early stage.
Earlier this month Clearwire had announced that it intends to upgrade its network for LTE technology, and wants to spend up to US$600m to achieve that goal.
Spokespeople for Sprint and Clearwire both declined to comment, referring to company policy not to comment on rumours or speculation.
