US wireless operator Sprint Nextel has completed its acquisition of PCS spectrum and close to half-a-million subscribers from smaller player US Cellular.
The US$480m transaction struck in November gives Sprint more capacity across America’s Midwest. It is acquiring 10MHz and 20MHz blocks in the 1900MHz band.
Sprint originally expected to acquire 585,000 of US Cellular’s 5.9 million subscribers, but in today’s announcement it has said it is only taking 420,000. Sprint said the change was due to fluctuations in wireless subscriber volumes of US Cellular customers in the areas where it purchased spectrum.
This announcement comes ahead of Tuesday’s vote by Clearwire shareholders over whether or not to accept Sprint’s US$2.97 offer to take over the wireless provider.
Sprint, under offer from both Softbank and Dish Network, is looking to expand its footprint with the acquisitions so it can compete with AT&T and Verizon Wireless.
