AT&T and Sprint Nextel have applied to carry out a spectrum swap, according to an FCC filing.
The US number one and number three mobile operators in the US are seeking permission to exchange a number of 1.9GHz licences in various markets in order to improve both of their wireless coverage capacities.
Sprint Nextel has asked AT&T to give it spectrum in Tampa, St. Petersburg, and Clearwater, Florida; New Orleans; South Bend and Mishawaka, Indiana; Charlotte, Greensboro, and Greenville, North Carolina and Cleveland.
In exchange, AT&T will receive spectrum covering parts of Dallas and Fort Worth, Texas; Denver; New Orleans and Baton Rouge, Louisiana; Des Moines and Quad Cities, Iowa; Honolulu; San Francisco, Oakland and San Jose, California; Omaha, Nebraska; Louisville, Lexington and Evansville, Kentucky; Spokane and Billings, Washington; and Salt Lake City.
There is no mention of any financial compensation, and neither company was available for comment due to the Thanksgiving holiday.
In 2009, AT&T paid Sprint US$59m for spectrum in parts of Colorado, Oklahoma, Florida.
