Intelsat’s president and chief commercial officer, Stephen Spengler, is to become the company’s new chief executive officer on 1 April 2015.
Spengler has been appointed deputy chief executive with immediate effect and will then assume the role of CEO next year.
Under the company’s succession plan, Intelsat chairman and CEO David McGlade will transition to the position of executive chairman when Spengler takes over as CEO. The April date will mark McGlade’s tenth year as Intelsat chief executive.
Spengler has been with Intelsat in various executive positions since 2003, including serving as executive vice president, sales, marketing and strategy as well as SVP Europe, Middle East, Africa and Asia-Pacific sales.
During his tenure at the company, Spengler led the expansion of Intelsat’s global mobility network and more recently the development of the company’s next generation satellite platform, Intelsat EpicNG.
He has nearly 30 years’ experience in the satellite and telecommunications industry. Prior to joining Intelsat, Spengler held various senior management positions in the communications industry, including: SVP of global sales, broadband access networks at Cirronet; vice president for sales and marketing at ViaSat Satellite Networks; regional sales director for satellite networks in EMEA for Scientific-Atlanta Europe; and sales and marketing positions at GTE Spacenet and GTE Corporation.
Commenting on the succession plan, McGlade stated: “Steve is a proven leader with outstanding customer and communications industry knowledge and the ability to execute a global plan. His vision has been instrumental in driving our next generation strategy, and in building new innovative services with the commercial satellite services we provide.”
