South Korea’s telecoms regulator has said that it will award licences for three spectrum bands for mobile operators in August, according to media reports.
Reuters reported today that the Korea Communications Commission is aiming to raise W1.15 trillion (US$1.1bn) from the spectrum awards.
The licences will be in the 800MHz, 1.8GHz and 2.1GHz spectrum bands.
The regulator expects to raise W261bn (US$242.9m) from the 800MHz sale and W445.5bn (US$414.6m) each from the 1.8GHz and 2.1GHz sales.
An operator will be allowed to win up to one licence in the auction.
The KCC reportedly said that it was making these awards in order to expand mobile telecom spectrum with the increase in data traffic and to form a competitive environment.
The operators will reportedly be able to use the 1.8GHz and 2.1GHz spectrum bands immediately after the sale, while the 800MHz band will become available in July 2012.
KCC did not reply to questions before the press deadline.
