The Paraguayan telecoms regulator is planning a spectrum auction for mobile services in the 80 MHz band later this year, according to local media reports.
The Paraguayan newspaper ABC reported on 12 March an adviser to the regulator Conatel announcing the spectrum auction.
Carolos Hirsch, a Mexican adviser that Conatel has hired from the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) also reportedly said that there was also a plan to prepare the country for the introduction of 4G.
He reportedly said that the national telecoms plan involved getting broadband access to 50% of the country, particularly in underserved areas, as well as to develop the mobile service.
Paraguay’s mobile operators currently include the state-owned operator Corporacion Paraguay de Comunicaciones (Copaco), as well as Tigo (a unit of the Luxembourg-based Millicom), Personal (a subsidiary of Telecom Argentina) and Claro, owned by America Movil.
