Bharti Airtel has hired former Uninor executive Jinesh Hegde as the new CEO of its Sri Lankan business.
Hegde succeeds Suren Goonewardene, who has been appointed a non-executive director of the unit, Airtel Lanka, the Indian parent company said in a statement.
Hegde, who has worked in telecoms for fourteen years, joined Uninor, the local unit of Norway’s Telenor, in September 2009 as chief marketing officer for the Gujarat Circle and later became head of business for the circle.
In his new role, he will report to Bharti Airtel director of market operations, Ajai Puri.
Puri said he is confident Hegde’s diverse experience and leadership skills will aid Airtel’s growth plans in Sri Lanka.
Airtel became Sri Lanka’s fifth mobile operators when it launched services in 2009. It competes with Dialog Axiata, Mobitel, Etisalat Sri Lanka and Hutchison Sri Lanka.
