The Korea Communications Commission (KCC), the country’s regulator, has decided against awarding mobile network licences to Internet Space Time (IST) and Korea Mobile Internet (KMI), according to the Korea Herald.
Both companies reportedly failed to secure the minimum of at least 70 points during the screening process. The auction of WiBro spectrum, scheduled to take place this month, has been cancelled as a result.
WiBro is a version of Wimax technology deployed in South Korea.
IST only scored 63.925 after the Hyundai Group decided to withdraw from the company’s consortium in mid-December.
As for KMI, it is suggested that the company had already failed twice in the past to obtain a licence because of funding issues.
The local newspaper explained that SK Telecom, KT Corp and LG U+, South Korea’s three mobile operators, will therefore not face further competition.
