Telenor has moved swiftly to appoint a replacement for Sigve Brekke, the previous head of its Asian businesses who was named as the Norwegian group’s new CEO last week.
Company veteran Morten Sorby has been made Telenor’s new Head of Region Asia, effective from the start of June.
Brekke will not become group CEO until August but will relinquish his responsibilities in Asia to prepare for the role, which sees him take the reins from Jon Fredrik Baksaas.
Sorby has worked within the Telenor group since 1993. His last role was as CEO of Telenor’s Indian subsidiary, Uninor, which he stepped down from in November last year for personal reasons.
Sorby’s other past roles at Telenor include being executive vice president in charge of corporate strategy and regulatory affairs, and the executive vice president and head of Telenor’s mobile and fixed network operations across the Nordic region.
Telenor has more than 100 million subscribers across Asia. It has operations in Bangladesh, India, Malaysia, Myanmar, Pakistan and Thailand.
