The Japanese operator will sell the bonds to retail investors in its home market, the person familiar with the matter said.

But a final decision had yet to be made, possibly by Thursday.

Softbank wants to use the proceeds to pay back debt, and for its newly acquired US subsidiary, Sprint.

Softbank refused to comment.
