Japanese mobile operator Softbank is calling on its local rivals to form a JPY500bn (US$6.2bn) JV to build a national fibre-optic network, reported the Associated Press.
Citing CEO Masayoshi Son, the report claims the company has submitted proposals to the government that would see it work with competitors Nippon Telegraph, KDDI and incumbent Telephone Corp (NTT) to replace existing copper-wire lines.
Last week, a separate local report suggested Softbank had approached the Japanese government to spin off NTT’s fibre-optic unit to establish a new public-private group.
This proposal is subject to a review by a working group at Japan’s Ministry of Communications, the report added.
