Hong Kong mobile operator SmarTone (HK:0315) has appointed CTO Stephen Chau Kam-kun as interim CEO to replace Douglas Li, who is retiring after more than 14 years at the helm.
Chau will take up the additional responsibilities on 1 September as the telco searches for a permanent replacement.
“Mr Chau’s leadership has shaped the company’s technological innovations, impacting all areas of business operations and establishing sustainable competitive advantages,” SmarTone said in a regulatory filing.
He joined the group in 1993, a year after it was founded, as head of operations.
Li became SmarTone’s first CEO in 1992. He left in 1996 to become managing director of Suez’s Asian private equity business, only to return to the role five years later.
