Mony de Swaan, the head of Mexico’s telecom regulator Cofetel, has hinted that he would be acquiescent with Carlos Slim’s desire to enter the Mexican TV market.
“It is possible and desirable,” Swann was quoted saying in Reuters
He added: “At a government level, we cannot continue talking about (telecom services) convergence while we impose artificial barriers to players.”.
Television is seen as vital to Telmex’s survival as the company loses business to smaller competitors which offer cheaply bundled Internet, television and phone service, Reuters said.
Such a move would help Telmex tap the market led by broadcast and cable affiliates of Grupo Televisa, the world’s leading producer of Spanish-language TV content.
In the past Mexico’s government has cited issues of competition as the reasons behind it blocking Slim’s TV plans.
