US VoIP Skype announced yesterday that it has agreed to acquire mobile video service company Qik.
The terms of the deal were not disclosed.
California-based Qik allows customers to capture and share videos in real time over mobiles and the web.
In a statement, Skype said that the acquisition would add new recording, sharing and storing capabilities to its product portfolio. Of particular interest is Qik’s Smart Streaming technology, which optimises video transmission over wireless networks.
Skype’s CEO, Tony Bates, said: “Qik’s deep engineering capabilities and strong mobile relationships will be an impressive complementary fit with Skype.”
