The official news agency of Syria has announced that the country has received six bids for the first round of the auction of its third mobile licence.
The six prospects are the UAE’s Etisalat, Saudi Arabia’s STC, Qatar’s QTel, Turkcell of Turkey, France Telecom and TEMI of Iran.
The deadline for applications was 14 November.
Mohammad al-Jalali, assistant minister of Telecommunications and Technology, was quoted saying that the tenders will be evaluated by a committee from the ministry, with the participation of a German advisory company. Two candidates will be chosen to go to the next stage, he added.
SyriaTel and MTN are currently providing mobile services in Syria through BOT agreements, which were signed in 2001 and run for 15 years.
