Brazilian telecoms regulator Anatel has received bids from seven satellite operators looking to take part in next week’s auction of four orbital slots.
Foreign FSS giants SES and Eutelsat are among those to have registered their interest as they looking to Latin America as a source of emerging market growth.
But the list also includes the notable mention of Star Satellite Communications Company, a subsidiary of UAE state-owned satellite operator Yahsat.
Canada’s Telesat and British MSS operator Inmarsat are also taking part.
They will be competing with Brazil’s Star One operator and Hispamar, a joint venture between Spain’s Hispasat and Brazilian telco Oi.
The auction is due to kick off on Tuesday and bids for the licences have a minimum price of R$12.22m (US$5.3m) each.
Anatel last sold orbital slots back in July 2011, raising R$233.2m (US$131.3m) in total.
Star One, Eutelsat and US-based satellite broadband provider Hughes were the winners of its last auction. Hughes relinquished one of the positions it bought only to recently buy capacity on a satellite Eutelsat is set to place there in 2016.
