SES has acquired the remaining 10% of SES Sirius that it did not already own. It took its previous 90% shareholding to 100% by acquiring the stake held in Sirius by the Swedish Space Corporation (SSC).
SES first bought a 50% stake in Sirius, formerly known as Nordic Satellite, in 2000. It acquired the shares of Tele Denmark and Teracom to become joint 50-50 shareholder with SSC.
Astra then further extended its ownership of the company to 75% in 2003, and 90% in January 2008. It renamed Nordic AB to SES Sirius in 2005. Sirius currently operates two satellites serving the Nordic regions and Eastern Europe at 4.8E and 5E respectively.
SES Astra President Ferdinand Kayser said: “SES Sirius is active in important growth markets that have been in our strategic focus for years. Therefore, we have gradually increased our stake in the company and established a strong presence in these different markets. While SES will continue to operate a Sweden-based company, the integration of the SES Sirius team and activities into our operations will be another important milestone in the implementation of our geographic expansion strategy.”
