The head of Finnish vendor Nokia’s project to develop its new MeeGo operating system, Ari Jaaksi, will leave the company at the end of October, a spokeswoman has confirmed.
She said: “Ari Jaaksi has decided to pursue opportunities outside of Nokia. We thank him for his contribution over the years. Despite Ari’s departure, our MeeGo strategy remains unchanged. MeeGo continues its strong momentum.”
However, a report by Bloomberg suggested Jaaksi’s departure could delay aspirations to ship devices based on MeeGo this year.
The spokeswoman insisted that Nokia never made such an announcement, adding that an update will be issued on the operating system by the end of this year.
Jaaksi is Nokia’s second high-level departure since the appointment of Stephen Elop as CEO on September 21.
Shortly after the new CEO’s arrival, Anssi Vanjoki announced he would depart his position as head of Nokia’s smartphone business, which has been facing heavy competition from rivals Apple and Google, in six months’ time.
According to RBS analyst Didier Scemama, Nokia’s entire top management could be under threat if they continue to be perceived as unwilling to take bold steps in the smartphone market.
