Denis Sverdlov, CEO of Russian wireless broadband operator Scartel (Yota), has been appointed Deputy Minister of Communications and Mass Media – the ministry in charge of telecoms.
Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev issued an executive order appointing Sverdlov to the position, the government’s press office said in a statement.
Alexei Volin, former deputy government chief of staff, has been appointed as a co-minister, the government said in a separate statement.
Russia’s Prime Business News Agency cited unidentified market sources as saying Sverdlov is likely to resign from his position at Scartel, expected to be merged with investor Alisher Usmanov’s controlling stake in mobile operation MegaFon. The Federal Antimonopoly Service (FAS) granted its approval for the merger in June.
