Kenyan mobile operator Safaricom announced its intention to buy ICT companies IGO Wireless Limited and Instaconnect Limited.
No financial details were released.
The transaction, which is expected to close this financial year, requires the approvals from both the Communications Commission of Kenya and the Monopolies Commission.
IGO Wireless, which holds a WiMAX licence, provides fixed wireless data services, while Instaconnect is licensed as an application service provider which primarily provides data integration solutions.
Safaricom said that the acquisitions are part of its strategy to grow its data business. The operator already owns One Communications and Packet Stream Data Networks, two of the eight companies holding WiMAX licences.
