Russia’s State Commission for Radio Frequencies (SCRF) has decided to auction frequencies for telecoms services in the 1,800 MHz band to develop GSM and LTE networks.
Licences for the spectrum will be valid for 10 years, the country’s communication’s ministry said in a statement.
The auction is designed to promote competition in the mobile sector, particularly in areas which are less well serviced, the ministry’s deputy head Dmitry Alkhazov said.
Local operators MTS, MegaFon, VimpelCom and Rostelecom won 4G licences in the 791-862 MHz band in a July 2012 auction. Tele 2 Russia, the other major player in the Russian mobile market, missed out. However, Rostelecom and Tele2 Russia recently created a mobile joint venture which will combine their spectrum.
