Rostelecom, the Russian telco, is exploring opportunities to enter the Ukrainian market by acquiring local ISP Datagroup, according to reports. The articles claimed that due diligence is under way.
RBC daily, which reported the news first, refers to two sources at management level at Rostelecom.
Although interest in entering the Ukranian fixed line market is high, buying Datagroup is not seen as the only way to do so, RBC Daily wrote. Rostelecom is also exploring alternative scenarios.
Rostelecom refused to comment to RBC Daily.
The publication pointed out that Rostelecom failed to gain access to the Ukrainian market last year, when former incumbent Ukrtelecom was privatised. The business was acquired by a subsidiary of Austria based PE firm EPIC Invest.
The Russian state holds a majority stake of 53% of ordinary shares in Rostelecom.
Its free float stands at 44.1% of the outstanding ordinary shares and 71.1% of the outstanding preferred shares, according to Rostelecom.
