Romania’s telecom regulator ANCOM and Ministry of National Defence (MapN) have launched a public consultation on the release of spectrum set to be auctioned off within the next six months.
ANCOM said in a statement it will cost an estimated €245.6m to re-farm the spectrum in the 830-862MHz, 1747.5-1785MHz, 1842.5-1880MHz and 2500MHz-2690MHz bands, which MapN currently uses.
The regulator said it would cover €30m of the total cost and the eventual winners of the proposed spectrum auction will have to cover the remainder.
The regulator’s draft emergency ordinance requires MapN to release the spectrum within six months of payment.
ANCOM said it hoped auctioning off the spectrum for broadband purposes would enhance competition in the domestic telecom sector and extend services to rural and “economically inefficient” areas.
