Romania has raised €682m from auctioning spectrum to five operators Vodafone Romania, Orange Romania, Cosmote, RCS&RDS and 2K Telecom, telecoms regulator Ancom said.
The frequencies on offer were in the 800MHz, 900MHz, 1800MHz and 2600MHz bands.
Vodafone Romania will pay €228.5m for a licence for 11 blocks valid from 2014 to 2029 – two blocks in the 800MHz band, two blocks in the 900MHz band, six blocks in the 1800MHz band and one block of 15MHz in the 2600MHz band – and a further eight blocks in the 900MHz and 1800MHz which will be valid from 2013 to 2014.
Orange Romania spent €227m. It acquired two blocks in the 800MHz band, two blocks in the 900MHz band, four blocks in the 1800MHz band and four blocks in the 2600MHz valid from 2014 to 2029. In addition it got hold of eight short-term licences in the 900MHz and 1800MHz bands valid between 2013 and 2014.
Cosmote won one block in the 800MHz band, two blocks in the 900MHz band, five blocks in the 1800MHz band and two blocks in the 2600MHz for €179.9m. Its licences are valid from 2014 to 2029.
RCS&RDS acquired one block in the 900MHz band for which it will pay €40m. Again, this license is valid from 2014 to 2029.
Lastly 2K Telecom spent €6.6m on two blocks of 15MHz in the 2600MHz band valid from 2014 to 2029.
“With this auction, the mobile communications in Romania have entered a new era: the spectrum resources available to the operators grow by 77% and allow for introducing the 4G technology, whereas the 900MHz band is more efficiently distributed,” said Catalin Marinescu, president of Ancom.
