Struggling Canadian handset maker Research in Motion (RIM) has nominated Timothy Dattels of investment firm TPG Capital as independent director on its board.
Dattels, previously an investment banker at Goldman Sachs, replaces Antonio Viana-Baptista, a former exec at Telefonica, who is not standing for re-election to the board.
Viana-Baptista had been on the board since 2009.
Last month RIM revealed it was working with JP Morgan and RBC Capital Markets to assess its strategic options and transform its fortunes.
RIM’s stock has fallen 70% over the last 12 months and the company posted a net loss of US$125m in March.
