Venezuelan telecoms regulator CONATEL has set out the spectrum frequencies that will be made available for mobile broadband in a future auction, according to local media reports.
Magazine TyN reported last week that spectrum in the bands 1710-2100MHz, 1800MHz, 1900MHz and 3500MHz would be auctioned, although a date has yet to be assigned.
On May 17, CONATEL quantified the country’s internet user numbers as 10.4m as of the end of Q1 2011, an increase of 12% on the equivalent period in 2010.
The figure for mobile subscribers was much higher at 27.2m, representing a penetration rate of close to 100%. According to the World Bank, Venezuela’s population in 2009 was 28.4m.
