Cableco RCS&RDS has made a bid for the government’s stake in telecoms incumbent Romtelecom, according to media reports.
The business website Balkans.com reported today that the Romanian communications minister had said that RCS&RDS had put in a bid for the 45.9% stake that the Romanian state holds in Romtelecom.
Valerian Vreme reportedly said that if the government did not reach an agreement with the Greek telco OTE, which holds a majority 54.01% stake in Romtelecom, he would prefer that Romtelecom was listed.
The head of OTE, Michael Tsamaz, will reportedly arrive in Bucharest on Wednesday to announce a decision on his company’s possible takeover of the government’s stake in Romtelecom.
The Romanian Ministry of Communications and Information Society announced in December that it was planning to sell its stake in Romtelecom.
Media reports suggested that OTE was looking to make a bid of E350m for the government’s stake, even though this fell far short of the government’s valuation, which was reportedly around double this amount.
