US aerospace and defence contractor Raytheon has acquired local special operations and cybersecurity firm Blackbird Technologies for around US$420m.
The deal increases Raytheon’s capabilities in tactical intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance, secure tactical communications and cybersecurity across multiple networks.
“Blackbird expands Raytheon’s already-established footprint in the intelligence community market while helping to grow our cyber operations and special missions support to the Department of Defense,” said Lynn Dugle, president of Raytheon Intelligence Information and Services
Blackbird’s products include satellite-based tracking, asset recovery and communication devices. It was set up in 1997 and is located in Virginia in the South Atlantic region of the US.
Raytheon Intelligence Information and Services was created last year after the group consolidated its businesses from six to four units to help combat a decline in US governmental spending.
The unit was created through combining its Intelligence and Information Systems and Raytheon Technical Services businesses.
Meanwhile the group’s existing businesses, Raytheon Space and Airborne Systems, Integrated Defense Systems and Missile Systems, were expanded by the realignment of the former Network Centric Systems business operations.
