US vendor Qualcomm has appointed Derek Aberle to company president where he will have oversight over all business divisions and drive the group’s growth strategy.
Aberle will report to recently-appointed CEO Steve Mollenkopf, who is relinquishing the company president role.
Aberle was previously executive vice president and group president. He had been a key figure in Qualcomm’s technology licensing unit, which more than doubled its revenues and profits under his leadership.
Mollenkopf, who had been COO before stepping into the CEO role earlier this month, commented: “Derek has been instrumental in creating and growing many important areas of Qualcomm’s business over the past 13 years, including our licensing business, and our wireless charging, display, platforms and services businesses.”
Aberle joined Qualcomm in 2000, having represented the company for a number of years while working at international law firms.
San Diego-based Qualcomm is the largest maker of mobile phone chips in the world and has a market capitalisation of US$130bn. It describes itself as “the world leader in 3G, 4G and next-generation wireless technologies”.
