Wireless equipment vendor Qualcomm has said its president and 20-year company veteran Steve Mollenkopf will take over as new CEO.
Mollenkopf became CEO-elect as of yesterday and is set to become Qualcomm’s permanent head following the company’s AGM in early March.
He takes over from Paul Jacobs who will become Qualcomm’s executive chairman, to help develop new technologies and long-term opportunities for the US vendor.
Mollenkopf will assume overall responsibility for the company. He was most recently Qualcomm’s president and COO. He will retain his role as company president.
Mollenkopf was a serious contender to replace Steve Ballmer as CEO of Microsoft, according to a Bloomberg report published yesterday.
Qualcomm is the largest maker of mobile phone chips in the world and describes itself as “the world leader in 3G, 4G and next-generation wireless technologies”. It has a market capitalisation of US$123bn.
