Qatar’s Qtel will invest QR600m (US$165m) on the initial phase of its Fibre to the Home (FTTH) rollout.
This will see the operator bet heavily on the deployment of Next Generation Broadband Fibre technology, which will enable broadband speeds of 100Mbps upwards, as well as advanced digital TV and telephony offerings.
Qtel CEO Dr Nasser Marafih was quoted by Arabian Business saying: “This is a major step forward for Qtel and for the people of Qatar. Our aim is to support the national strategy to make Qatar one of the best connected nations in the region, and ultimately the world.
The national FTTH network will bring the next generation of technology services and entertainment to Qatar, and transform people’s experience of the internet.”
Qatar currently has broadband penetration of around 60% of households.
