Qtel, Qatar’s state-owned mobile and fixed-line telco, has picked Qatar National Bank to launch its mobile money transfer service later this year.
The telco plans to enable mobile money transfer both within Qatar and internationally to key providers of migrant labour such as India, Indonesia and the Philippines.
Qtel and Qatar National Bank already work together to allow Qtel customers to access their accounts using the bank’s cashpoints.
On 18 May, Vodafone Qatar, Qtel’s only competitor in Qatar, announced that it would launch a mobile money transfer service in the form of mobile remittances to the Philippines in June.
Both telcos are early adopters of mobile money transfer services which have proved successful in Africa and South East Asia, but which remain rare in the Middle East and North Africa.
