Qatar Telecom (Qtel) is considering increasing its stake in Wataniya Telecom Algeria, known as Nedjma, CEO Nasser Marafih reportedly said.
However, Marafih added that Qtel had abandoned plans to expand in sub-Saharan Africa because of the high competition on the continent.
The CEO, who was quoted in local news reports, also said that the company could look to increase its stake in its Iraqi subsidiary, Asiacell.
Qtel owns 36.2% of mobile operator Wataniya Telecom Algeria (Nedjma), via a 71% stake held by Kuwaiti-based Wataniya Telecom (NMTC), a 51%-owned subsidiary of Qtel.
The Qatari firm had previously shown strong interest in acquiring Meditel, the Moroccan mobile operator sold by Telefonica and Portugal Telecom.
