The Qatari government has set up a company responsible for rolling out a national FTTH network, telecoms regulator ictQatar has announced.
Qatar National Broadband Network Company (Q.NBN), which must cover 95% of the country by 2015, will be a fully independent company governed by ictQatar.
It will deploy passive network infrastructure only, while leveraging existing and new infrastructure. Developed in consultation with QTel and Vodafone, the new network will support the services the existing operators offer to government, enterprise and consumers.
ictQatar said it is fostering national digitisation and cloud computing as part of its plans to drive broadband demand and uptake.
