The Russian government has reportedly backed a list of board candidates for state-controlled Rostelecom that excludes president and CEO Alexander Provotorov.
Russia’s Prime news agency cited an unidentified source as saying state holding company Svyazinvest, with which Rostelecom is being merged, has presented the list to the telco’s board of directors.
According to the report, the list has “been agreed upon in the government”.
Rostelecom has declined to comment on the matter.
Rumours were first sparked last year that Provotrov may be replaced, and Russian news agencies recently quoted deputy prime minister Arkady Dvorkovich as saying the government is discussing a management shake-up at the telco. The rumours were fuelled by news on 1 March that Marshall Capital Partners, a former employer of Provotov, had sold its entire 10.7% stake in Rostelecom to an investment firm owned by oligarch Arkady Rotenberg, a childhood friend and former judo partner of Russian president Vladimir Putin.
According to the Prime report, the list of new board candidates includes former Tele2 Russia CEO Dmitry Strashnov, Svyazinvest head Vadim Semyonov, VEB Capital chief Yury Koudimov and FK Otkrytie CEO Ruben Aganbegyan.
Provotorov became CEO of Rostelcom in July 2010, and last April his contract was extended until July 2015.
