Poland’s Office of Competition and Consumer Protection has given the green light for the sale of mobile operator Polkomtel to Spartan Capital Holdings, the investment company owned by local businessman Zygmunt Solorz-Zak.
Solorz-Zak agreed to buy the second largest Polish mobile operator in July for PLN18.1bn (US$5.6bn).
The businessman already has telecoms and media assets in the country. He owns pay-TV company Cyfrowa Polsat as well as mobile providers Aero2, Mobyland and CenterNet. The latter two are jointly developing LTE communications.
The acquisition will enable Solorz-Zak to use Polkomtel’s infrastructure and subscriber base to develop a 4G network.
Earlier this month the EBRD announced it would acquire a 16.2% stake in Polkomtel for up to E200m equivalent in Polish Zloty.
