A mobile licence auction could take place in Peru in 2010, as local reports indicate the country’s government believes there is now enough interest to attract a fourth operator.
Local press has stated that the Peruvian transport and communications ministry believes there is now enough activity on the Peruvian mobile market to attract a fourth operator, and that it is planning to launch a licence auction later this year.
The Peruvian government last tried to auction off a fourth mobile licence in late 2009, but the November 30 deadline for proposals is now said to have been extended to allow for more interested parties. The late 2009 auction drew attention from Peruvian operator Americatel and Kuwaiti telco HITS Telecom, but both are believed to have struggled with funds for the licence.
A final decision from the ministry is expected shortly.
