RPR Privatstiftung has acquired a call option over 5.4% of Telekom Austria shares, the Austrian incumbent said in a release.
The call option was acquired by Marathon Zwei Beteiligungs GmbH, fully-owned by Marathon Beteiligungs GmbH, itself fully-owned by RPR Privatstiftung.
Local businessman Ronny Pecik is the managing director of both Marathon Beteiligungs GmbH and Marathon Zwei Beteiligungs GmbH.
Reports that Pecik was looking to acquire up to 20% of the telco surfaced in September and in October reports suggested that he may be working with Egyptian tycoon Naguib Sawiris. Telekom Austria was reported in early October to be set to hire BoA Merrill Lynch to help ward off a hostile takeover bid.
This call option enables Marathon Zwei Beteiligungs to acquire up to 5.4% of Telekom Austria’s shares with equal voting rights of up to 5.4%. It can be exercised at any time until 18 June 2012.
As RPR Privatstiftung and its subsidiaries already hold 64,742 shares and 310,000 shares respectively, the exercise of the call option would result in total shareholdings of RPR Privatstiftung of about 5.485% of total shares outstanding.
