Speculation over the acquisition of Egyptian mobile telecom company, Orascom’s Algerian operations by the Algerian government was denied by Moussa Benhamadi, the country’s Telecommunications Minister.
In a call from Reuters asking about the proposed deal Benhamadi said: “It is not true!”
It was reported that talks would be starting between the government and Orascom in Algiers early next week, but the minister affirmed: “nothing will be decided” until experts had completed a valuation of the unit.
The government had previously barred Orascom from selling the unit to South Africa’s MTN.
